New pages for the Sketchbook Project

Finally! I made some pictures of my sketchbook pages...
It was hard to pick a nice day to make some photo's of my book outside. (for the best light)
The weather is very very cold.
It's snowing / raining in the Netherlands... and it's getting dark allready at 16:00!
~
Viktor & Rolf. Fineliner, white colorpencil, acrylics, ballpoint on texture paper.

Last year i went to an exhibition of Viktor & Rolf and i love their designs and the concepts they have. I think they are magicians with clothes. When i saw a photo of them with the hats i wanted to use it.
~
Couch. blue ballpoint, acrylic, blue pencil on texture paper.
One day i want a couch like this.
~
Little shell. (Blue) pencil on paper, natural paper in the background.  My friend is getting married next year and while we were checking out some dresses i saw a very nice one. Short on the front and big layers in the back.
~
Queen. Pencil, acrylic, goldpaint, red ballpoint on paper.
I found an old queen playcard and i thought that it would be interesting to draw the queen figure again but then in another way.
~
 Snowby. White marker, ballpoint.
I wanted to give here white eyelashes but i don't have a small fineliner for that. I think it doesn't excist.
Looking for that for a long time. So i changed her eyes and now they are freaky blue.

Tulle. Acrylic, (blue) pencil on paper.
Sometimes i find strange animals on the internet. Like this little kittycat. It looks like he smashed his head against the wall. Still: Really cute.
~
Kittycat. Pencil and fiber on paper.

Stamps. Pencil, acrylic and poscamarker.

~
Mouth. color pencil, white fineliner on paper.
I made little details with a white fineliner and i just love to make this page.
~
Bunny. White fineliner, posca marker, pencil on postnotes.
I try new things so i can use it later if i want to make paintings in 2011.

The Sketchbook Project of Arthouse Co-op

The Sketchbook Project: 2011
Last week I joined The Sketchbook Project.
I ordered a sketchbook and i have 40 days to fill 40 pages!
Then i send it back to the United States.
"Thousands of sketchbooks will be exhibited at galleries and museums as they make their way on tour across the country" Arthouseco-op says. Click on the image for more information.

A very nice idea don't you think? 28728 artists from 94 countries around the world are participating!
Intro page. Pencil, blue pencil and acrylic on Moleskine paper.
On the left there will be a pocket with my biography but i made an info page on the right too.
~
Spread 1. Blue pencil, color pencil and acrylic on old book paper.
The paper in the background is from a very old book with old fashioned dutch language.
~
Spread 2. Acrylic, (color)pencil, fineliner, wallpaper and ballpoint on Moleskin paper.
I want to give this book a feminin style with all the things that i love in it.
~
Spread 3. Acrylic, (color) pencil and ballpoint on paper.
I have to paint a bracelet, so i used this page for it. I love to freestyle and see what happens.

Dessins

I made some dessins. It is a new way for me to fill a picture and i learned a lot about the color dodge and screen options in Photoshop.  You can use the same flower and make it look like you draw it many times.
 ~
Baby blue color in the background and it gives another feeling.
~
Colors can change the whole picture and it's fun to play with it.

These are the roses i used.

Dream

Here i'm working on a painting based on an old sketch i made for a wallpainting in a hotel in Brussel, Belgium. My friend Rosa, wanted this painting for a long time, so i changed the sketch and added some things because i wasn't happy with the old sketch.

Pencil on paper. 21 cm x 29,7 cm.
I added some flowers and changed the composition and the girl as you can see above, but Rosa wanted the old composition...
Pencil on paper, 21 cm x 29,7 cm.
Here you can see i changed the composition. The girl keeps her legs closer to her body and the tree is curved. Because the canvas was square i had to cut of a part of the sketch.

Acrylic and oilpaint on canvas, 100 cm x 100 cm.
The final painting took me about 5 days. I'm quite happy with the result, there are more girly paintings to come.
Acrylic and oilpaint on canvas, 100 cm x 100 cm. Close-up.

Space Granny.

Above: Acrylics and oilpaint on canvas 50 cm x 50 cm / 19,7" x 19,7"
Above: Pencil on paper.

This painting was made for the lottery of "Willeke Alberti" a dutch singer. She had a gala yesterday in 'Hotels van Oranje' where she gave our book "Kleine Dingen Met Liefde Doen" to a lot of people. We were invited and it was great to be there. I hope Willeke can help a lot of (lonely old) people with her foundation. I finished the painting in a rush so i hope it's allright like this.

Calendar

I made a calendar design. With this kind of things i'm happy that i have a graphic design background! Every month there's another new illustration above. On the right there is a little description about the illustration.

I realized that the week starts on a different day in America than in Europe. In Amercia for example it starts with "sunday".The dutch calendars starts with "monday" ...i always thought this was kind of weird because when we learn the days of the week as a kid we start with sunday. So i prefer the American way...

"Perfume"

Acrylics on Rives BFK paper. 43,5 cm x 31,5 cm.
Finally finished this personal work. It was nice to try different kind of paper. I think i prefer the hotpress watercolor paper from Arches. I like the way she looks, i wanted to give the illustration sphere.

Workspace

You have a lot of blogs these days, but i realize that there aren't videoblogs from illustrators, so i'm going to do this more now!  This is a 5 min movie where i show you around in my atelier / workspace. I thought it would be nice to show where i work and paint.

Cover illustration: A.L.O.I.S

I finally finished my project A.L.O.I.S. with six illustrations for a little book. It's about people who struggle with addictions. I had different keywords like selfknowledge, convinced or succes to work with. It was great to make a serie and did a little character design because i had to draw the figure 6 times. Here are a few proces pictures.

The cover should show a figure who looks at himself in the mirror and standing in a fightposition. I changed the elements a little. The hands don't need boxing gloves because i think it's more natural without them and otherwise you refer to sport. The guy is smashing the mirror and breaks his own image. Sometimes you have to break with old habbits to build new ones!

Hatgirl

Pencil and Photoshop.
I tried something new, i will post a tutorial about it.

Illustration 5: Succes

Pencil and Photoshop.

This is the last illustration for the book A.L.O.I.S. but i'm not finished yet. I also have to make a cover.
The little book is about people who struggle with addiction. I uses in this illustration a lot of happy colors and it's a natural design. Succes is something you can't touch but you feel it. I symbolized the fact that people grow if they are succesfull.

Self knowledge

Pencil and Photoshop.  50 x 70 cm.
This illustration is one of the 6 illustration i'm making for a book that's about people who struggle with all kind of addictions. When i thought about self-knowledge i had to think about knowing yourself really good in your life, which decisions you should make, which not, that's why the figure is holding a book with brains on it. You can imagine it's a map or something where he looks at with his laserglasses.  I chose to use owls, because they are sybolism for wisdom. If he walks the ground lights up with every step, just like the movie clip from Michael Jackson (which i think is very cool). The illustration is darker than the other ones but i think it's better for the concept.

Fashion girls & 50 + Event

Pencil on paper.
I made these sketches for wooden bracelets but i could also use it for clothes, like a t-shirt design. I have so many ideas to work out, but i work on several projects now.

Last year Roland Pupupin, photographer, and i made a book: "Kleine Dingen Met Liefde Doen".
It means doing small things with lots of love. The book shows how i made a 328 feet wallpainting in a nursing home in Amersfoort. Roland made lots of portraits of the old people and of the making of.
If you want to order the book, just contact me. info@marjoleincaljouw.nl

Freestyle sketches

Pencil, colorpencil and acrylics on paper.
I'm using different materials in my sketchbook again. You can surprise yourself easier if you do whatever you want without thinking.

Pencil, colorpencil and acrylics on paper.
This was for a wallpainting in Amsterdam.
Pencil, colored pencil and ballpoint on paper.
Gemma Ward on the left. She has such a special beautiful face. Joris on the right at a sketchmeeting in the park in Utrecht. I'm thinking about modelsketching again because it's always the best thing to do!
Girl-stuff. Ballpoint on paper. I really want to paint on big canvasses soon, but i'm busy with 6 illustrations and a chair right now.

Selfknowledge

Pencil on paper. 21 x 29,7 cm.
For the little book: A.L.O.I.S.

This sketch is about selfknowledge and how you can avoid problems (traps) in your life. It's always challenging to draw something that's physical, something you can't grab.
I'm changing the background right now, because the beartraps are too litarley and i feel like i can make it more symbolic!

Convinced

Pencil on paper: 50 x 70 cm.
The rough sketch traced on my lighttable onto big smooth paper.
If you also want to have a big lightbox and you can't find a nice one, you can buy a table with glass on top. I have one with a milky glassplate, perfect for transferring images. Buy TL-lights and search for a 'very handy man' that will fix your lightbox table. If you're a man: Do it yourself and feel awsome.
Pencil and Photoshop.
While i was working on this piece i definitely pushed myself to work with movement, technical stuff and background. The webcolors are really soft, it's actual much more colorful.

New visitcards

I made two different versions for my visitcards. I like the elephant more.
Don't you think?

Inspiration

I saw these beautiful characters in Utrecht in a window somewhere.
Too bad there was no name, number or website to find next to the objects!
Does anybody now how it was made?
I'm guessing gypsum, because it's very smooth. Or maybe clay? One day i really want to make my own 3d characters!
